How to use Cedar Strips to Light a Cigar

Smoking is as much about the accessories attached to the activity as it is about the tobacco itself. As is the case with cooking a gourmet meal, a smoker oftentimes spends an equal amount of time deciding upon the best way to go about their preferred leisure activity as they do deciding upon which type of tobacco or cigar they prefer. Among the very gourmet methods of smoking cigars is the lighting of the stogie with a cedar strip.

To do this, one needs the same devices they normally would require to enjoy a cigar: a high-quality lighter or matches, depending on one’s preference; any one of the numerous types of cigar cutters available; a good cigar; and, of course, some time to enjoy the smoke. Actually lighting the cigar with cedar is no different than lighting the cigar with a match or a lighter; it is in the reasons for doing so that the rationale for the various techniques involved are discovered.

Cedar is a good lighting device as it burns quickly, easily and hot. Cedar is also resistant to rot which means that a pack of strips can last a very long time if they’re not frequently used. Some smokers claim cedar adds a flavor all its own and some claim they can’t taste a thing. The latter is usually the goal with those who prefer this method of lighting their cigars.

A match or a lighter”butane, if chemicals are the issue”is used to ignite the cedar strip. These strips will usually burn for more than long enough to light a cigar. Sometimes they can be used for several. The flame is applied to the cigar as would any other flame: The cigar should be rotated while puffing to produce a nice, even cherry and to avoid any part of the cigar from becoming too hot. Be sure that the strip is extinguished fully before setting it aside!

The disadvantages are principally in transportation. Cedar strips are not convenient to carry around in a pocket and, on the same tact, add another step to lighting the cigar. They are also vulnerable to moisture and, of course, when carried in a pocket they may disintegrate a bit and leave some particles behind in one’s shirt or trousers. Cedar strips are usually a method used in the home or at a cigar bar. For a different smoking experience, using cedar to light up can be quite a bit of fun. Even if it’s not one’s preferred method, keeping some strips around provides an elegant option.
