The most confusing decision you may have to make after you’ve chosen to have cosmetic surgery is who your doctor will be. You may want to initially do some research online, looking up each plastic surgeon and checking out his or her website. You may need to covertly research your cosmetic surgeon by thinking about creative ways to learn more about him or her. You’ll probably want to make sure each cosmetic surgeon you are thinking about is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. You’ll also want to make sure that your cosmetic surgeon belongs to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
After this first phase of research you’ll come up with a list of four or five plastic surgeons who can perform the procedures you want. Now you should set up an initial appointment at each office. In busy surgeon’s offices it can take a couple months to actually get an initial appointment, but don’t be discouraged. Most doctors do not charge for this visit.
Remember: your relationship with your plastic surgeon will be more than just the normal relationship between a doctor and a patient. Your plastic surgeon will be responsible for improving your body permanently, so having a good relationship built on open understanding is important. At your meeting with your prospective doctor ask plenty of questions and take notes not only on what is said but also on how he or she talks to you.
After office visits you should probably have your choice between one or two cosmetic surgeons. Now you can think about what facilities your surgeon will use, payment options and ultimately which plastic surgeon you felt most comfortable with.
It’s not always easy to pick the plastic surgeon who is going to change your body and your life. Try listing the pros and cons of each on a piece of paper and talking about them with friends that you respect. Sometimes the people closest to you can offer you advice on major decisions like choosing a cosmetic surgeon. As soon as you’ve chosen your surgeon and have scheduled the procedure you can sit back and relax, knowing that you’ve made the correct choice by choosing the best plastic surgeon that fits your needs and wants!
