Maintaining your health during your college years could be very important to your overall success as a student. In case you have not given much thought about the challenge of being healthy and fit while at college, then take a look at the four simple health tips that I outline in the following paragraphs.
1. Exercise Regularly. Hitting the books and staying in a small room with eyes fixed on your computer all the time could lead to illness in the long or even the short run. Balance your study with regular exercise by choosing some sport or other active pursuit that is enjoyable to you. In college you can visit the gym or fitness centers that are available on most campuses or take part in a sports program. If you are not the athletic type, then get your exercise by jogging, bicycling or even just by walking. Exercising on a regular basis will keep you healthy not only in college, but throughout your life.
2. Eat with Nutrition in Mind. You may be on your own when you are at college and can choose from a wide variety of foods. However, before you slip into a habit of eating fast foods and snacks, instead of balanced meals, do your best to maintain a routine of three square meals a day, starting with a solid breakfast. A diet that is unbalanced or poor in nutrients will ultimately result in illness during the course of the semester, and could even damage your health in the years ahead. So, even without your mom there to tell you to eat your vegetables, you should take control of your diet and eat the food that will keep your healthy during your college years.
3. Get Proper Sleep. You have heard of college students doing “all nighters,” taking coffee and other stimulants to study deep into the night. Well, that kind of routine can work once in a while but it is extremely unhealthy if it becomes a habit. When your body tells you that it is tired you should heed the signals and go to bed. If you need to gain some extra study time, then a better way to do it is to go to sleep early and get up and study in the wee hours of the morning when it is very quiet and your mind is fresh. Similarly, late night partying is good once in a while but not very healthy when done continually. So, be sensible about study, recreation and sleep and balance your activities so that you remain physically fit and mentally alert.
4. Handle damaging substance carefully. In many ways you are on your own at college. You will have a lot of freedom and this also means that you have a lot of responsibility for what you do with your life. A big challenge for any college age youth is how to handle alcohol, tobacco and other substances that are not particularly healthy. One of the best ways to make wise choices in this matter is to put everything in the proper perspective. Remember that you are investing a lot of time, and probably money, into your college education and if the use of any product is going to put your health at risk and jeopardize this investment, you should avoid or carefully control the use of that product.
As you can see the above guidelines are simple, but they can help you to stay fit during your college years and well into the rest of your life.
