Tanning Bed Number One Precaution

Everyone should know by now the dangers of ultraviolet radiation. We are exposed to high levels whenever we are out in the sun, but tanning beds are highly concentrated pods of UV rays making them more dangerous than the sun. It can damage softer tissues of the body if proper protection is not used.

Among the most sensitive organs are your eyes and it is highly advised that anyone using a tanning bed wear goggles, sometimes known as peepers. And if you are a regular tanner it is a good idea to own you own pair of peepers. It is truly a wonder why such a simple precautionary step remains ignored by some people.

Even though tanning salons will offer disposables, and they are much better than no protection at all, they usually aren’t the best quality. Also, tanning salons offer a one-size-fit-all design that may not fit perfectly on everyone. Do not compromise the safety of your eyes, you need them every day.

Where the goggles don’t fit perfectly, the corners tend to allow leaks and that is enough for the UV rays to damage your eyes. You really need a pair that doesn’t allow leaks and doesn’t have a chance of falling off accidentally. That is why it is a good idea just to own your own pair that seals the eyes completely and has a band to go around the head so they stay on.

Similar to the type that tanning salons give out to their guest, you can buy disposble goggles. But if you are a regular goer, it makes more sense to have a pair you own that is of good quality and you can carry it with you to every visit to the tanning salon.

It’s also a good idea to keep your eyes closed through the duration of your tanning session. High intensities of ultraviolet rays will damage the retina and cornea of your eyes and many times beyond repair.

Cataracts is a very real possibility when your eyes are exposed to too much UV radiation, especially if it is unprotected. Going blind is a possibility when the eye is damaged beyond repair, or reparatory surgery does not go well.

While tanning beds do put other parts of your body in danger, it the eyes that are the most sensitive. The precautions are such simple instructions and the potential health risks that can be prevented are so great that there is no reason to take the chance.

Fortunately, there are other forms of sunless tanning options that can leave your skin looking well toned without blasting yourself with dangerous amounts of UV radiation. Tanning lotions are recommended by many health associations because of the relative safety they offer in contrast to other methods.
