We think our sense of hearing is a birthright, something we are born to have. Unfortunately, people can lose their hearing and a person doesn’t even have to be well advanced in years. The first step is to look at what causes hearing loss in the first place, what you can do about it and ultimately what treatments can be administered on the person.
Aside from other abnormalities, babies are more at risk of getting hearing loss than anything else. Kids as small as possible can already get hearing loss if not properly protected from it. Hearing disorders are also caused by eating medication, experiencing trauma or just being sick.
A person who is subjected to loud environmental noises day in and day out is likely to lose their sense of hearing. Airports, concerts, crowds or anything else for that matter can lead people to lose their sense of hearing. Power tools are machinery that emit loud levels of noise and protective hearing equipment should be worn to avoid damage.
A doctor usually uses hearing aids to treat different kinds of hearing impairment. There are more than ten different kinds of hearing aids and each one has their pros and cons. All hearing aids, no matter what size or shape, will ultimately be an amplifier of surrounding sound to the user.
How and where exactly the hearing aid is supposed to be worn determine its classification. A BTE or behind the ear aids is a device made up of a case, tube and ear mold. Unlike other hearing aids, the using a BTE, you need not worry about moisture or earwax impacting the device as only the ear mold is worn inside the ear.
Aside from the BTE, there is a new medical breakthrough called cochlear implants which is simply a device made to replace your cochlear. The cochlear or bionic ear implant needs to be surgically implanted underneath the scalp and right behind the affected ear. The bionic ear is made to work similarly like the real cochlea and that is to gather the surrounding sound, convert these into electronic impulses, then transmits these to the brain through electrodes.
Cochlear implants are made of a microphone, speech processor, transmitter, converter and electrodes. The whole procedure and the device itself are all very expensive and is out of the reach of ordinary citizens. Aside from the huge price tag, a person’s hearing history, health, and other minor things are checked to see if the implants will have a high chance of success.
Gene therapy is also a new form of hearing treatment that is being looked at by specialists. A person doesn’t have to worry about bulky hearing aids anymore, as gene therapy may one day allow people to grow new body parts. Gene therapy is still a new science and no definite plans are present yet.
Prevention is the best medicine when it comes to hearing impairment but sometimes there is nothing a person can do but live with hearing treatments. Hearing treatments as you can see are very broad and there are many types of which may not be applicable to certain people, the only way to be sure what should be used is by going to see your doctor. It is time you get your hearing checked.
